Fix Erroneous Credit Scores

Learn how to correct incorrect reports of spending on your credit report here.

Having an incorrect credit score can lead to large interests costs on your credit card balance. Here are the steps you can take to avoid any discrepancies:

  • Get a copy of your credit report- It is advised to get a report from all three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union, as this is that many lenders do to analyze your credit history. Another viable option is to get a consolidated report from the three agencies. If you sign up for a credit monitoring service, you may be entitled to a free credit report.1
  • Look for errors on your report- Common miscues stem from credit granters or reporting agencies incorrectly entering information, fraudulent activity, or derogatory information not removed despite no longer existing. 2 For a lengthy list of what errors to look for, consult Credit Info Web.
  • Contact your credit bureau. If you find an error, you are entitled to a reinvestigation and response within thirty days. 3 Contacting the bureau can be done by either submitting your claim in writing or completing the request for reinvestigation form that came with your credit report. Be sure to enclose all documents that support your statements. Information in question that is determined to be incorrect or cannot be verified will be removed from your report. If prior lenders were misinformed, they will then be informed of the change. If your claims are denied, you may still add a statement to your file detailing your side of the story. 4

Inaccuracies in credit reports are not uncommon, and it is unquestionably worthwhile to check for such errors. However, reviewing your credit report too often can have a negative effect on your credit score. Consequently, it is best to limit such activities to a few times a year and/or prior to making large purchases.
